Robot dogs recently appeared on Boing Boing in this article describing a video of a Chinese drone leaving an armed robotic dog. Well, here’s another post about a robot dog, but this time it’s a little less scary. Well, that’s still scary, but more humorously and less in an “oh shit, armed robot dogs are scary because the world does NOT need more guns.” Check out this video of a robot dog, posted on Reddit under the subtitle / strangely scary, wearing a ridiculous rubber husky mask, trying to play with a group of real dogs. The real husky is excited in an “Oh yeah, some friends!” somehow, and the other dogs seem very confused and even a little wary. However, the cat is a complete “WTF”. I must say that I am with the cat!
About Robot Dog
The American Southwest is a region that mixes rugged landscapes, extreme temperatures, and various other non-environmental threats that can create dangerous obstacles for those patrolling the border. The territory is vast and monitoring it is essential for the security of our nation. That’s why the Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is offering a US hand (or “paw”) for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) with new technology that can help improve CBP staffing capabilities, increasing at the same time their safety.
S&T has a deep understanding of CBP’s technology needs in the field. In its role as the research and development arm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), S&T always identifies solutions to support the complex CBP mission. For example, S&T is currently supplementing CBP’s bipedal human staff with quadrupedal mechanical reinforcements to help the agency better allocate resources. In this case, man’s best friend has a very futuristic twist.
“The southern border can be an inhospitable place for humans and beasts, which is exactly why a car can excel there,” said Brenda Long, S&T program manager. “This S&T-led initiative focuses on automated ground surveillance vehicles, or what we call ‘AGSV’. Basically, the AGSV program is about … robot dogs.”
